MANDOLIN BROTHERS OFFERS KINGSTON TRIO'S
VEGA PETE SEEGER LONG NECK TO BENEFIT
DAVE GUARD

59-5761 Vega 1959 Pete Seeger - owned by Dave Guard,
co-founder of THE KINGSTON TRIO

There are arguably, three ultimately collectible five-string banjos in the world: Earl Scruggs' banjo would be one of them, Pete Seeger's would be another one. This is the third. How do you even value a banjo which has as much historical importance as these instruments? It is said that Bill Monroe has been offered a quarter million dollars for his Gibson F-5 mandolin, and we all know that Buddy Holly's '40s Gibson J-45 flattop guitar just recently sold for over two hundred thousand dollars.

As Allan Shaw has said, Dave Guard is seriously ill and needs help to cover extensive medical expenses. We have agreed to handle, on his behalf, the sale of his banjo, which was used to record every song that you and I and everybody else sang along with in the early '60s from "Tom Dooley" to "Charley on the MTA." (I can cheerfully tell you that if it weren't for the Kingston Trio there wouldn't be a Stan Jay, as we know him today, and there wouldn't be a Mandolin Brothers.)

This banjo is accompanied by a letter from Mr. Guard, which says: "I bought this Pete Seeger model Vega banjo 99836 brand new in 1959 and have owned it ever since. I used it exclusively in my work with the original Kingston Trio, including concerts and albums. It was featured on the cover of the "Goin' Places" album on Capitol Records. I took delivery at Eddie Bell's guitar shop in New York City and requested that he add Scruggs tuners, but this improvised version of the tuners were primitive and unsatisfactory so I removed them and what remains are the holes where they had been. The colored stickers on the fingerboard relate to a concept I developed to teach myself (and others) the location and harmonic relationship of musical tones and they date from 1967. The instrument has historical significance but more importantly has great sentimental value to me and I would never part with it except as a result of this life-threatening illness I'm experiencing — in any case I hope it finds an appreciative home. With Great Love and Respect, (signed) Dave Guard."

To own this banjo is to own one of the most astounding and meaningful pieces of American musical history there is. The price of the banjo is $15,000 (bank check, wire transfer) but if some benefactor wishes to pay more than that for it, we will be glad to send the extra funds to Dave Guard. Photos, as always, are available on request, as well as a copy of a Special Edition booklet which features articles by and about Dave Guard.
