WHEN DAVE GUARD MOVED TO AUSTRALIA in 1962, he became involved in a range of musical activities. Apart from writing, he made appearances on many LP records, compered local live folk music shows, put down backgrounds for radio and TV commercials and played a prominent role In two 13-week television series. Arguably, the highlight of Dave's career in Australia came with his much-anticipated 1965 television meld of traditional and progressive folk music with jazz, known as Dave's Place.
The 30-minute black and white program (colour TV in Australia still a decade away) was recorded at the Australian Broadcasting Commission television studios at Gore Hill, Sydney, to be shown nationally at 6PM on Sunday nights. Dave's Place featured Dave Guard in the multiple roles of compere, leader of the show's resident singing group (known simply as The Dave's Place Group), duettist with guests and solo performer in his own right.
THE LYNCHPIN OF DAVE'S PLACE was The Dave's Place Group, which consisted of Dave Guard (vocal, electric and acoustic guitar, banjo, tambourine), Chris Bonett (vocal, electric bass guitar} and a series of three female members, Frances Stone, Kerrilee Male and Norma Shirlee Stoneman.
Drummer Len Young was credited in the end titles and was often referred-to by Dave as part of the group, but apart from playing tambourine up front with Dave on two songs, Out On the Western Plain and Guardo El Lobo, he remained in the background. Harmonica player Shane Duckham joined the group for both of their performances in one episode only.
Streaming-only songs and videos from the show are featured in the following table:
* with Frances Stone | ** with Kerrilee Male | *** with Norma Shirlee Stoneman | **** with Shane Duckham |
